Mark Melamed serves as deputy vice president of NTI’s Global Nuclear Policy Program. In this role, he works on policies and NTI programs related to nuclear arms control, strategic stability, and the global disarmament and nonproliferation regime.
Prior to joining NTI, Melamed worked on arms control and security issues in various roles within the U.S. government. He previously served as deputy director in the Office of Multilateral and Nuclear Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, where he focused on the development and implementation of U.S. nuclear policy in various United Nations forums, the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, and the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty review process.
Prior to that, Melamed served as director for arms control at the National Security Council from 2012-2014. He has also held several positions at the State Department, working on NATO defense policy, European security, and arms control issues as well as serving as Summit Coordinator for the 2014 NATO Summit in Wales.
Melamed began his U.S. government career as a Presidential Management Fellow in the Office of Policy and International Affairs at the Department of Energy. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM), and holds an M.P.A. from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and a B.A. from the University of Arizona.
This paper offers a focused set of recommendations for specific commitments related to practical and achievable actions that States parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) could take to advance the NPT’s goals and achieve success at the 10th NPT Review Conference.
