NTI convened 30 nuclear security leaders, including six ambassadors, from more than a dozen countries for the 17th meeting of the Global Dialogue on Nuclear Security Priorities from March 13-14, 2024, in Mauerbach, Austria. The group, which represented government, industry, international organizations, and NGO perspectives, focused on preparations for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s upcoming International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS). ICONS, scheduled for May 2024, is a critical opportunity for senior government officials to improve nuclear security across the globe. Governments will have the chance to make new commitments, share best practices, and announce progress on nuclear security, and ministers and technical experts will be able to discuss the most pressing topics in nuclear security.
During the Global Dialogue meeting, participants developed plans to ensure successful outcomes at ICONS and leverage that momentum to reinvigorate nuclear security internationally. Sessions also covered the current condition of global nuclear security, strategies for integrating nuclear security into broader nonproliferation dialogues, and what nuclear security will look like 20 years from now. Some of the most innovative ideas generated during the meeting included new approaches for sustaining high-level attention on nuclear security, diversifying delegations at international meetings, strengthening nuclear security resilience, and reframing national responsibility as national accountability.
