About the image
The world has not yet maximized nuclear energy’s potential to help meet the mounting demand for clean, firm, secure electricity.
A partnership that seeks to enable the rapid expansion of safe and secure nuclear energy.
A world where nuclear energy propels progress toward climate, energy security, and economic development goals without leading to more nuclear weapons.
The Nuclear Scaling Initiative (NSI) is a collaborative effort of NTI, Clean Air Task Force (CATF), and the EFI Foundation (EFIF) to build a new nuclear energy ecosystem that can quickly and economically scale to more than 50 gigawatts of safe and secure nuclear energy per year by the 2030s. The team’s plan for revolutionizing how nuclear energy is constructed, financed, and regulated will advance climate goals, spark economic development, expand energy access, and ensure that nuclear technology is used for only peaceful purposes.
Since 2023, NSI has combined CATF, EFIF, and NTI’s unparalleled capabilities in nuclear technology, policy, security, and finance, along with strong public and private sector experience and deep geopolitical insight. NSI is currently focused on driving progress in Central and Eastern Europe and the United States with an approach that emphasizes aggregated demand; multi-stakeholder risk-sharing; cohesive action by policymakers, the private sector, and civil society; accelerated deployment timelines; integrated supply chains; and strong nonproliferation and security practices. As the initiative progresses, NSI plans to broaden its scope to support the responsible expansion of nuclear energy in other regions, including Africa, the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia.

The Nuclear Scaling Initiative has published a new roadmap outlining a comprehensive strategy for building a new nuclear energy ecosystem capable of dramatically increasing the deployment of safe and secure nuclear energy to 50 gigawatts or more annually by the 2030s.
A major new gift from Joe Gebbia and Isabelle Boemeke will establish he Nuclear Scaling Initiative — a collaborative effort to catalyze and build a new nuclear energy ecosystem to scale to 50 or more gigawatts of clean, safe, and secure nuclear power per year by the 2030s, a tenfold increase of the current deployment rate.
NTI advanced key principles from a recent report that outlines pathways for the responsible, sustainable, and effective development of new nuclear projects and industries in embarking countries.
At this critical juncture for action on climate change and energy security, 20 NGOs from around the globe jointly call for the efficient and responsible expansion of nuclear energy and advance six key principles for doing so.
To make good on their COP28 pledge, countries need a new approach to building, regulating, and financing nuclear technology.
"This will help create a global nuclear ecosystem that can deliver historically large annual nuclear deployments for an extended period and meet strong nonproliferation and nuclear security standards,” said NTI Co-Chair and CEO Ernest J. Moniz
The Playbook emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to scaling nuclear energy, considering the unique challenges and opportunities specific to each country, and highlights the role that new international institutions could play in supporting a global nuclear expansion.
